Do I need to obtain permits for remodeling projects?

Most home renovation and remodeling projects do require a building permit. As a homeowner you may obtain a building permit on your own. If you hire a general contractor in the state of Wisconsin, they are required to have a Dwelling Contractors certification to be able to obtain a building permit. Depending on the work to be completed, additional permits are required to be taken out for the plumbing, electrical, and HVAC work.  These “subcontractors” will obtain their permits after the initial building permit has been taken out by the homeowner or Dwelling Contractor.
